There has long been an on going issue with the levels of traffic congestion surrounding the Thurmaston retail outlet park. This has been increasing at an alarming rate due to the increased popularity of the shopping centre as well as housing developments in the surrounding areas.
The location of such a retail park was never sited in a suitable area. It is on the doorstep of a small village community and four neighbouring schools. Due to the nature of the location, the road infrastructure was never designed, nor is it for the capacity of traffic flow it sees today.
During peak times (weekday mornings, evenings and weekends) the surrounding area becomes gridlocked causing chaos. This has led to congestion tailbacks leading all the way down High Way Road on to Earls Way, Barky Thorpe Lane backing onto the Duck Pond Lane and Melton Road backing up past Round Hill Academy.
This traffic congestion has major implications on the surrounding area. It is not only a huge disruption to the local residents who live near by and there daily commute to work, but the pollution caused by standing traffic will most likely have an adverse effect on the health to those who live close by due to poor air quality.
There have been multiple occasions where emergency services have been unable to reach there intended destination at the speed they would have liked due to being stuck in the above stated congestion.
The traffic congestion also has huge implications on the public transport passing through the area, causing delays in the services.
The increased pollution levels caused by the excessive amount of traffic does not help to reach targets set out by local Councils in reducing the carbon emissions.
There has recently been a pedestrian crossing installed on the mini round about between Asda and the retail park which has now lead to even further traffic disruptions. There is a pedestrian crossing no more than 100 meters away from the newly installed one. The new pedestrian crossing was installed due to an accident involving a car collision with a child. This alone proves there is an issue with traffic within the area. The higher the levels of traffic, the more increased chance of collisions.
The local Highway Agency need to make alterations to the road lay out to prevent traffic build up or to reduce the volume of traffic within the area. The entrances to the retail parks are poorly sited, along with the car park having restrictive access throughout causing traffic built up.
In summary, it was never a suitable place to site a retail park. The road infrastructure requires a major upgrade to make it fit for purpose and to relieve pollution, risks of accidents and the inconvenience on local residents living in the area.
